The sun hides during Gungahlin's cool, cloudy March.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during March were much cooler and more cloudy than normal.
Nights were mild, with an average minimum of 11.1°C; down on the average of 11.7°C recorded last March. Gungahlin’s longer term March average is 11.4°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on March 10, when the temperature was a muggy 15.5°C, while on March 27, it dropped to a cool 6.2°C.
Days were generally mild to warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 22.3°C; down on last years average of 24.5°C and well below Gungahlin’s longer term March average of 25.0°C. In fact, it was the coolest average maximum recorded during March since records began at the Weather Centre back in 1999. The highest temperature for the month was a very warm 28.6°C, recorded on March 13, while on March 24, cloudy skies, gusty NW winds and patchy drizzle combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 17.5°C.
Proving winter isn’t too far away, Gungahlin recorded its first major fog of the year on March 16. The fog, which had cleared by 9am, was thick enough to cause hazardous conditions during the early morning commute.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.1 km/h during March, with the strongest gust for the month 37.0 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on March 1.
After a very wet February, which saw 103.4mm of rain fall in Gungahlin, falls during March were much lighter. Gungahlin recorded 30.8mm of rain for the month, over 9 days. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term March average of 33.6mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were a little heavier, with Canberra AP recording 41.4mm for the month, Tuggeranong 78.2mm and Monash 68.6mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2011 now stands at 165.0mm, slightly above the 161.0mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's April outlook: Slightly cooler, cloudier weather conditions are set to continue into April. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 19°C, and nights at 7°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term April average of 7.3°C to 20.7°C. Despite the fairly dry March, rainfall prospects for April look reasonably positive, with Gungahlin set to receive around 45mm of rain during the month, well above the longer term April average of just 28.2mm.
