Gungahlin records its second driest February on record.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during February were generally very warm and extremely dry.

Nights were mild, with an average minimum of 13.8°C; slightly warmer than last years average of 13.5°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term February average minimum temperature is 13.7°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on February 12, when the minimum was a muggy 17.0°C, while on February 3 it dropped to a cool 7.9°C.

Days were generally very warm to hot and cloudy, with an average maximum of 28.1°C; down on last year’s average of 29.0°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term February average is 27.5°C.  The highest temperature for the month was 33.6°C, recorded on February 8.  In contrast, Gungahlin’s coolest February 2015 maximum temperature was 21.9°C, recorded on February 25.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 1.0 km/h during February, with the strongest gust for the month 24.1 km/h from the SW, recorded on February 8.

After such a promising start to the new rainfall year last month, when 106.8mm of rain fell in Gungahlin, February was terribly dry.  In fact, just 4.6mm of rain fell at the Weather Centre, over 7 days.  This made it the second driest February recorded in Gungahlin.  The driest February (2009), saw just 4.4mm of rain fall.

Falls in other parts of Canberra were generally much heavier, assisted by several passing thunderstorms that missed Canberra’s north.  Canberra AP recorded 30.2mm for the month, Tuggeranong 55.2mm, Monash 49.0mm and Melba 12.6mm.
