More typical weather returns to Gungahlin in February.

After recording its hottest January on record, weather conditions in Gungahlin during February were more typical of the season.

Nights were mild, with an average minimum of 13.4°C; well above last years average of 12.3°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term February average minimum temperature is 13.7°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on February 9, when the temperature was a muggy 18.5°C, while on February 3 it dropped to a cooler 8.9°C.

Days were generally very warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 27.2°C; well above last years average of 24.1°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term February average is 27.4°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a sizzling 34.8°C, recorded on both February 8 and 9.  In contrast, Gungahlin’s coolest February 2013 maximum temperature was just 19.0°C, recorded on the last day of summer (February 28).

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at just 1.4 km/h during February, with the strongest gust for the month 33.8 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on February 9.

Gungahlin received 48.8mm of rain during February, over 9 days.  The majority of this total coming from several rain bands and associated storms that moved across the region during the last week of February.  Falls in other parts of Canberra during February were welcome, but a little mixed, with totals largely dependent on location as the rain bands moved in.  Canberra AP recorded 31.6mm for the month and Tuggeranong 65.0mm but Monash, in Canberra’s SE, recorded a whopping 102.2mm.

Gungahlin’s total rainfall for 2013 now stands at 115.0mm, down on the 148.4mm that fell over the corresponding period last year.
