Summer ends with a whimper.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during February pretty much summed up the entire summer, with cooler temperatures and less sunshine than normal. In fact, the temperature in Gungahlin reached 30°C or above on only 11 days this summer, well down on the longer term average of 34 days.
Nights were mild, with an average minimum of 12.3°C; well down on last years average of 13.8°C. Gungahlin’s longer term February average is 13.9°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on February 28, when the temperature was a humid 16.8°C, while on February 13 it dropped to a cool 8.7°C.
Days were warm and mostly cloudy, with an average maximum of 24.1°C; down on last years average of 26.4°C. Gungahlin’s longer term February average is 27.6°C. The highest temperature for the month was a very warm 30.8°C, recorded on February 25, while on February 2, cloudy skies and continuous light rain combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 14.9°C.
Despite the season, Gungahlin recorded 3 fogs during February. Not surprisingly though, there was no frost.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 1.4 km/h during February, with the strongest gust for the month 29.0 km/h from the NW, recorded on February 5.
After a very dry start to the year the rain returned to the region during February, with Gungahlin recording a welcome 118.4mm of rain for the month, over 17 days. This compares to the 101.0mm that fell last February and the 104.2mm in 2010. Gungahlin’s longer term February rainfall average is 58.4mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were also well above average, with Canberra AP recording 127.0mm for the month, Monash 157.4mm, Tuggeranong 146.2mm and Melba 187.6mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall for 2012 now stands at 148.4mm, up on the 131.9mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's March outlook: Current indications are that Gungahlin’s recent spell of cooler, cloudier weather will continue into the first month of autumn.
Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 24°C, and nights at 11°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term March average of 11.4°C to 25.0°C. March is typically one of the driest months of the year in Gungahlin with an average of just 33.4mm. Despite this, rainfall prospects for the month ahead are positive, with Gungahlin likely to receive at least 80mm of rain during March 2012.
