Gungahlin records a warm, wet start to 2016.

Weather Conditions across Gungahlin to start the New Year were slightly cooler and much wetter than normal.

Nights were mild, with an average minimum of 14.2°C; down on last years average of 14.3°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term January average is 13.9°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on January 20, when the temperature was a hard to sleep through 21.6°C, while on January 16 it dropped to a cool 7.3°C.

Days were generally very warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 28.4°C; up on last years average of 27.2°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term January average is 29.3°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a very hot 39.0°C, recorded on January 13.  In contrast, Gungahlin’s coolest January 2016 maximum was 16.3°C, recorded on January 5.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 1.4 km/h during January, with the strongest gust for the month 51.5km/h from the NW, recorded on January 21.

Rainfall to start the new year was much higher than normal, with Gungahlin receiving a welcome 94.6mm of rain in January, over 14 days.  Gungahlin’s longer term January average is 45.0mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra during January were also well above average, with Canberra AP recording 106.0mm for the month, Tuggeranong 108.4mm, Melba 102.7mm and Monash 99.0mm.
