Gungahlin records a cool, wet start to the New Year.

Weather Conditions across Gungahlin to start the New Year were a little cooler and much wetter than normal.

Nights were mild to warm, with an average minimum of 14.3°C; up on last years average of 13.5°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term January average is 13.9°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on January 24, when the temperature was a muggy 17.9°C, while on January 31 it dropped to a more pleasant 8.4°C.

Days were generally very warm and mostly cloudy, with an average maximum of 27.2°C; down on last years near record breaking average of 31.4°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term January average is 29.3°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a hot 35.3°C, recorded on January 2.  In contrast, Gungahlin’s coolest January 2015 maximum was just 17.2°C, recorded on January 27.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.0 km/h during January, with the strongest gust for the month 37.0 km/h from the NW, recorded on January 17.

After a very dry start to the New Year last year, which saw just 9.4mm fall across Gungahlin, falls to start 2015 were impressive and very welcome. Gungahlin received a whopping 106.8mm of rain in January, over 10 days.  Gungahlin’s longer term January average is 42.2mm.

Falls in other parts of Canberra during January were also well above average, with Canberra AP recording 97.0mm for the month, Tuggeranong 144.6mm, Melba 123.4mm and Monash 167.4mm.
