Gungahlin records a warm and dry start to 2012.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during January were warm and cloudy, but temperatures and rainfall were below normal.
Nights were mild, with an average minimum of 12.2°C; well down on last years average of 14.3°C. Gungahlin’s longer term January average minimum is 13.8°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on January 30, when the temperature was a muggy 17.6°C, while on January 12 it dropped to 3.2°C, the coldest January morning recorded in Gungahlin since the Weather Centre opened in 1999.
Days were warm and mostly cloudy, with an average maximum of 26.7°C; cooler than last years average of 28.5°C and well below Gungahlin’s longer term January average of 29.1°C. The highest temperature for the month was a hot 33.6°C, recorded on January 3, while on January 11, cloudy skies, strong W winds and nearby mountain snow combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 16.1°C.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.5 km/h during January, with the strongest gust for the month 59.5 km/h from the W, recorded on January 11.
In 2011, Gungahlin recorded a healthy 516.6mm of rain but falls to start 2012 were a little disappointing. Gungahlin received 30.0mm of rain in January, over 6 days. This compares to the 30.8mm that fell in Gungahlin last January and is well down on Gungahlin’s longer term January average of 38.5mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were much heavier, with Canberra AP recording 46.8mm for the month, Tuggeranong 85.0mm, Monash 99.8mm and Melba 43.5mm.
Gungahlin's February outlook: Cooler, cloudier weather looks set to continue in Gungahlin during February, with temperatures remaining slightly below normal. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 26°C, and nights at 12°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term February average of 13.8°C to 27.6°C. Rainfall prospects for the month ahead look mixed, and will largely depend on Gungahlin receiving its share of passing thunderstorms. With this in mind, it’s unlikely Gungahlin will have a repeat of last Februarys rain total of 104.2mm. Gungahlin’s longer term February rainfall average is 50.3mm.
