Gungahlin records a hot, dry end to 2015.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during December 2015 were generally much warmer and drier than normal.

Nights were cool to mild, with an average minimum of 12.0°C; down on last Decembers average of 12.8°C, but above Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 11.7°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on December 20, when the temperature was a muggy 17.7°C, while on December 28, it dropped to a cool 6.5°C.

Days were generally very warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 29.3°C; up on last years average of 27.6°C and well above Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 26.6°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a hot 36.4°C, recorded on December 20, while on December 26, cloudy skies and periods of rain combined to keep Gungahlin’s maximum temperature to a cooler 22.6°C.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at just 1.9 km/h during December, with the strongest gust for the month 46.7 km/h from the NW, recorded on December 1.

After a fairly wet November, Gungahlin recorded just 29.2mm of rain during December, over 7 days.  This compares to the 87.2mm that fell last December and Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 53.5mm.

Falls in other parts of Canberra were also below average, with Canberra AP recording 34.8mm for the month, Tuggeranong 30.8mm, Monash 29.0mm and Melba 45.2mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall for 2015 was 502.4mm, down slightly on the 509.8mm that fell in Gungahlin during 2014.
