Gungahlin records a warm, dry end to 2013.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during December were generally warmer and drier than normal.
Nights were cool to mild, with an average minimum of 11.7°C; down on last Decembers average of 12.2°C, but spot on Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 11.7°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on December 20, when the temperature was a muggy 17.5°C, while on December 7, it dropped to a cool 4.3°C.
Days were generally very warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 28.4°C; well up on last years average of 26.9°C and Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 26.3°C. The highest temperature for the month was a scorching 37.2°C, recorded on December 22, while on December 5, cloudy skies, rain, strong N winds and highland snow, combined to keep Gungahlin’s maximum temperature to a cold summer high of just 16.3°C.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.7 km/h during December, with the strongest gust for the month 62.8 km/h from the W, recorded during the early hours of December 9.
After a wet November, Gungahlin recorded just 15.6mm of rain during December, over 5 days. This compares to 47.0mm that fell last December and Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 52.9mm.
Falls in other parts of Canberra were also light, with Canberra AP recording 23.2mm for the month, Tuggeranong 15.2mm, Monash 19.0mm and Melba 20.6mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall for 2013 was 443.0mm, well down on the 662.6mm that fell in Gungahlin during 2012.
