Gungahlin records a cool, wet December.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during December were cooler and wetter normal.
Nights were mild, with an average minimum of 11.3°C; down
on last Decembers average of 12.3°C and slightly cooler than Gungahlin’s longer
term December average of 11.8°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on
December 9, when the temperature was a muggy 17.6°C, while on December 20, it
dropped to a cool 5.3°C.
Days were generally warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 23.9°C; well down on last years average of 28.3°C and considerably cooler than Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 26.4°C. The warmest temperature for the month occurred on December 31, when the temperature reached a hot 32.9°C, while overcast skies, gusty N winds and steady rain combined to keep Gungahlin’s maximum temperature on December 20 to a cold 14.4°C.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 3.2 km/h during December, with the strongest gust for the month 53.1 km/h from the NW, recorded on December 18.
The recent spell of widespread, heavy rain continued in December, with Gungahlin recording 119.4mm for the month, over 15 days. This compared to the 61.8mm that fell last December, and is well above Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 57.6mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were even more impressive, with Canberra AP recording 198.4mm for the month, Tuggeranong 253.4mm and Monash 190.2mm. The December falls brought Gungahlin’s 2010 rainfall total to 699.6mm, well up on the 390.2mm that fell in 2009. In fact, 2010 was the second wettest year in Gungahlin since the Weather Centre opened in 1998. In 1999, 776.0mm of rain fell. For the record, Canberra AP recorded 958.4mm of rain in 2010, Tuggeranong 1,119.4mm and Monash 1,092.2mm.
Gungahlin's January outlook: The recent spell of cooler, wetter weather looks set to continue into the first month of 2011. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 27°C, and nights at 13°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term January average of 14°C to 29°C. Rainfall prospects for the month ahead look positive, with Gungahlin likely to receive around 50mm of rain during January, well up on longer term January average of 39.7mm.
