Gungahlin records a cool, wet start to summer 2008/2009.
Weather conditions to start the summer season in Gungahlin were much cooler, cloudier, windier and wetter than usual.
Nights mild, with an average minimum of 11.6°C; down on the 12.5°C recorded last December. The warmest night for the month occurred on December 6, when the temperature was a warm 17.2°C, while on December 20 it dropped to a cooler 6.1°C.
Days were generally mild to warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 24.5°C; well down Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 26.4°C. The highest temperature for the month was a hot 30.8°C, recorded on December 26. In contrast, overcast skies and steady rain combined to keep Gungahlin’s maximum temperature on December 12 to a rather un-summer like 14.2°C.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 4.6 km/h during December, with the strongest gust for the month 64.4 km/h from the N/NW, recorded on December 13.
Heavy rain on December 12 and 13, coupled with passing storms on December 27 helped to push Gungahlin’s December rainfall to a healthy 95.5mm, over 9 days. This compared to the 81.0mm which fell last December and Gungahlin’s longer term December rainfall average of 51.5mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were even more impressive, with 116.6mm recorded at Canberra AP and 105.2mm at Tuggeranong. Gungahlin’s total rainfall for 2008 totalled 503.0mm, slightly above the 499.0mm which fell in 2007.
Gungahlin's January Outlook: Current indications are that cooler and wetter than normal weather conditions will continue in Gungahlin during January. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 27°C, and nights at 12°C (longer term average is 13.9°C to 29.0°C). Rainfall prospects continue to look positive, with the chance of Gungahlin exceeding its longer term January rainfall average of 41.5mm about 70%.
