Cool end to Gungahlin's hot November.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during November were considerably warmer and drier than normal. In fact, it was easily the warmest November recorded in Gungahlin since the Weather Centre opened in 1999.
Nights were mild, with an average minimum of 12.4°C; up on
the average of 9.9°C recorded last November and well above Gungahlin’s longer
term November average of 9.4°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on
November 21, when the temperature was a sticky 18.4°C, while on November 8, it
dropped to a cooler 8.2°C.
Days were generally very warm to hot and sunny, with an average maximum of 28.2°C; up on last years average of 23.0°C and well above Gungahlin’s longer term November average of 23.4°C. The highest temperature for the month was a record breaking 36.6°C, recorded on November 19, while on November 23, overcast skies, drizzle and cool E winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 18.0°C.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.4 km/h during November, with the strongest gust for the month 64.4 km/h from the N, recorded on November 3.
As predicted last month, Gungahlin received well below average rain during November, with just 19.4mm falling at the Weather Centre, over 9 days. This compared to the 68.2mm that fell last November and is well down on Gungahlin’s longer term November average of 69.2mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were also light and well below normal, with Canberra AP recording just 14.2mm for the month and Tuggeranong only 12.8mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2009 now stands at 328.4mm, well down on the 407.6mm that fell over the same period last year. Note: If Gungahlin fails to receive at last 38.4mm of rain during December, 2009 will be the driest year recorded at the Weather Centre since it opened in 1999. The current record dry year is 2006 when just 366.8mm fell.
Gungahlin's December outlook: After the warmest and one of the driest Novembers on record, more average weather conditions should return to Gungahlin during December. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 26°C, and nights at 11°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 11.8°C to 26.4°C. Rainfall prospects for the month ahead are improving and Gungahlin looks likely to receive around 50mm of rain during December, down slightly on the monthly average of almost 52mm.
