Records tumble during Gungahlin's mixed October 2014.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during October were mixed and rather changeable.  Interestingly, Gungahlin recorded both its highest and lowest maximum temperatures in the same month.

Nights were cool, with an average minimum of 7.1; up on the average of 5.5°C recorded last October.  Gungahlin’s longer term October average is 6.6°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on October 24, when the temperature was a mild 12.3°C, while on October 2, it dropped to a cold 0.8°C.

Days were generally mild to warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 22.2°C; up on last October’s average of 20.7°C, and well above Gungahlin’s longer term October average of 19.9°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a hot 31.4°C*, recorded on October 31, while on October 14, overcast skies, heavy rain and nearby snowfalls combined to keep Gungahlin’s maximum temperature to a cold 7.2°C**.

* The 31.4°C recorded on October 31 is a new record October maximum for Gungahlin (previous record 31.1°C in October 2006).

** The 7.2°C maximum recorded on October 14 is a new record low maximum for October in Gungahlin (previous record 8.2°C in October 2010).

Gungahlin received 2 frosts during October and there were no fogs.  This compares to the 4 frosts and 0 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during October 2013.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 3.1 km/h during October, with the strongest gust for the month 54.7 km/h from the W, recorded on October 27.

Gungahlin recorded 42.2mm of rain during October, over 5 days.  This compares to the 17.8mm that fell last October.  Gungahlin’s longer term October average is 49.8mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 53.4mm for the month, Monash 39.6mm, Tuggeranong 36.8mm and Melba 59.7mm.
