October weather mixed.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during October were a little mixed but, on the whole, slightly cooler and wetter than normal.
Nights were cool, with an average minimum of 5.9; down on the average of 6.5°C recorded last October. Gungahlin’s longer term October average is 6.6°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on October 16, when the temperature was a mild 13.5°C, while on October 1, it dropped to a frosty minus 1.1°C.
Days were generally mild to warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 20.5°C; up on last October’s average of 19.2°C, and above Gungahlin’s longer term October average of 19.7°C. The highest temperature for the month was a very warm 28.8°C, recorded on October 31, while on October 11, heavy rain, cold NW winds and nearby snowfalls combined to keep Gungahlin’s maximum temperature to just 10.5°C. Of note, widespread snowfalls occurred on the morning of October 12, with some 10cm of snow covering Goulburn at 8am. Snow also fell at Collector, Bywong and Wamboyn. No snow was recorded in Gungahlin.
Gungahlin received 5 frosts during October and there were no fogs. This compares to the 7 frosts and 0 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during October 2011.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 3.3 km/h during October, with the strongest gust for the month 46.7 km/h from the NW, recorded on October 25.
Gungahlin recorded 53.6mm of rain during October, over 5 days. The bulk of this total (32.6mm) fell on October 11. Gungahlin also received the lion share of a storm that passed over Canberra on October 30, with 10mm falling in just 15 minutes. Gungahlin’s longer term October average is 52.4mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 53.6mm for the month, Monash 60.8mm, Tuggeranong 58.6mm and Melba 65.1mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2012 now stands at 582.8mm, well up on the 347.2mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's November outlook: Slightly cooler, cloudier weather conditions look set to dominate in November. Overall, daytime temperatures will average at around 22°C, and nights at 8°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term November average of 9.8°C to 23.7°C. Rainfall prospects are a little harder to predict, especially as we enter the storm season. November is traditionally the wettest month of the year in Gungahlin, with an average of 73.2mm. On current trends, it looks likely that Gungahlin will receive at least average falls during the month.
