Cool October, but no snow.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during October were a little cooler and drier than normal, but there was no repeat of the unseasonal snowfall recorded in Gungahlin last October.
Nights were cool, with an average minimum of 6.5°C; down on the average of 7.1°C recorded last October. Gungahlin’s longer term October average is 6.7°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on October 24, when the temperature was a mild 16.1°C, while on October 12, it dropped to a frosty 0.3°C.
Days were generally mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of 19.2°C; up on last October’s average of 18.5°C, but well down on Gungahlin’s longer term October average of 19.8°C. The highest temperature for the month was a very warm 27.9°C, recorded on October 24, while on October 10, overcast skies and gusty NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin’s maximum to just 13.3°C.
Gungahlin received 7 frosts during October and there were no fogs. This compares to the 4 frosts and 1 fog recorded in Gungahlin during October 2010.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.6 km/h during October, with the strongest gust for the month 43.5 km/h from the NW, recorded on October 24.
The recent dry spell continued in October, with Gungahlin recording only 34.0mm of rain during the month, over 12 days. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term October average of 52.4mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were also below average, with Canberra AP recording 17.0mm for the month, Monash 38.8mm, Tuggeranong 41.0mm and Melba 29.3mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2011 now stands at 347.2mm, well down on the 468.4mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's November outlook: The current cooler, cloudier weather pattern looks set to continue in Gungahlin during November. Overall, daytime temperatures will average at around 22°C, and nights at 9°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term November average of 9.7°C to 23.8°C. Rainfall prospects are a little harder to predict, especially as we enter the storm season, but indications are that the recent dry spell will continue in November. With this in mind, Gungahlin looks set to receive no more than 50mm of rain for the month, down on the longer term average of 65.0mm.
