Rain and hail - but little shine during cool, cloudy October 2003.

Weather conditions in Gungahlin during October were mixed, with more rain, less sun, cooler temperatures, hail and even some snow!

Nights were generally cool, with an average minimum of 5.6°C, down slightly on last October's average of 5.7°C.   The warmest night for the month occurred on October 18, when the temperature was a mild 10.1°C, while on October 11 it dropped to a cold 1.0°C.  

Days were cool to mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of 17.0°C, well down on last October's average of 20.2°C.   The highest temperature for the month was a warm 23.0°C, recorded on October 18, while on October 10, cold NW winds, sleet and brief snow combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum to just 10.9°C.  

Gungahlin received 2 frosts during October, bringing the total number of frosts so far in 2003 to 66, and there was 1 fog.   Gungahlin was hit by a severe thunderstorm on October 25.  The storm dumped 21.8mm of rain and hail across the area, with many parts of Ngunnawal briefly looking like a winter wonderland under 2cm of hail and ice.

Snow fell briefly in Gungahlin during the afternoon of October 10.  The snow didn't settle, but it was Gungahlin's first fall of 2003.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 6.8km/h during October, with the strongest gust for the month 72.4km/h from the NNW, recorded on October 25.

Gungahlin's October rainfall was an impressive 72.9mm, over 11 days.  This brought Gungahlin's total rainfall so far in 2003 to 393.8mm, down on the 417.6mm that fell over the same period in 2002.

Gungahlin's November Outlook:  Current indications are for cooler, cloudier and wetter spring weather continuing in November.   Days should average at around 20°C and nights at 9°C.  Rainfall again looks set to be above average, with monthly totals upward of 60mm likely.
